Absence/Mancanze

Alessia Cocca’s photographs are shadows that never leave us in the ephemeral blurring of time.

As reflections of our unconscious and labile human existence, built in (made of) either what we are, but most especially in (of) what we have missed, which has slowly faded before our eyes; “perhaps we are equally made of what has been and what could have been” said javier Marías in speech for the Rómulo Gallegos Award ceremony.

Her exhibit is a reflection on life, time and abandonment, on both having and not having been, on everything the presence in this world represents, no matters how precarious and ephemeral it might be.

The graceful creatures depicted in Alessia Cocca’s shots don't have a place, they live in our unconscious and they keep us from being free; they load us with the weight of existence, we are the tenuous thread that binds them in the deep oblivion of memory, they lull us in a rarefied moment of nostalgia.

Individuals who live with us in our existence, these creature are not located anywhere, except where we place them. Vague and shaded, fragile and powerful, these fleeting creatures are true and empty yet they can inflict a mild but curling pain, which drags us into a glooming melancholia and reminds us of the transience of life, a mere temporary loan for each of us.

They are stuck in the eternity of time, although time is never eternal, they are eternal in the little duration of our existence: time is fleeting, present is not forever, but they always remain in it.

They are absence of our life that we don’t want to let go and therefore we do become the binding thread between the two; in each object, in each sensation, we feel a presence that from the far ether is watching us and it’s leaving us in an unconscious melancholy in which we enjoy ourselves. They give us a pale laconic dream in which we can find shelter.
