Alex Katz: Black Paintings

Set against black backgrounds, what is striking about this new body of portraits is both the depth and diversity of black, as well as dramatic studio lighting. Figures are located on the edges of the ‘widescreen’ frame, making the paintings both theatrical and cinematic. This will be the artist’s seventh exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, including a conversation between Alex Katz and Iwona Blazwick, Director, Whitechapel Gallery, London.
