press release

In the context of the exhibition Newtopia - The State of Human Rights (September 1st to December 10th) in Mechelen the solo satellite exhibition of Alfredo Jaar is taking place from October 10th to December 10th in ING's Culture Centre on Place Royale/Koningsplein in Brussels. This exhibition is dedicated to Alfredo Jaar, one of the key artists of NEWTOPIA.

Jaar's exhibition at ING Cultural Centre will focus on the work the artist has made concerning the African continent. It will include work relating to Angola, Sudan, South Africa and will also feature several key works from the artist's seminal Rwanda Project (1994-2000), a long-term attempt to tackle the senseless violence that resulted in the deaths of over a million Tutsis in 1994 (the third largest genocide of the twentieth century). At the heart of this project is the problem of representation. In a masterful style characterised by subtlety and respect for his subjects, Jaar's work addresses the complex question of how it is possible to engender empathy and affect, in a world saturated with images of violence and suffering.

His oeuvre creates individual awareness in visitors and an immediate feeling of collective responsibility. The exhibition is curated by Katerina Gregos.
