Ali Banisadr. The World Upside Down
29.09.2018 - 17.11.2018
Blain|Southern Berlin

Ali Banisadr presents two comprehensive bodies of work for his first solo exhibition in Germany, The World Upside Down. In this title the artist references philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin and his concept of carnival as a subversive event that inverts structures of power. Banisadr says 'The world is a carnivalesque stage, we’re all actors of one sort or another. We’re all implicated. Caught up in our own madness.’

In 12 new paintings Banisadr employs the order of theatrical and social archetypes and distorts them to create a carnivalesque disruption. 12 new works on paper, the largest ever produced by the artist, introduce an entirely new, almost three dimensional style.

A major new publication accompanies this exhibition. Ali Banisadr Volume Two is a continuation of Ali Banisadr, One Hundred and Twenty-Five Paintings (2015). The new volume includes every painting since 2015, as well as all works on paper. Together they form the artist’s first Catalogue Raisonne. The new book includes a text by novelist Azareen van der Vliet Oloomi, an essay by art historian Dr David Anfam and an interview with art critic Negar Azimi.
