American Icons

While the history of photography is richly based in Europe, American photographers embraced it with passion and exuberance. American Icons traces the evolution of photography in 20th century America, from Alfred Stieglitz’s turn of the century modernism to the New York underworld of Nan Goldin. Documentary photography of the depression-era FSA by Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein and Marion Post Wolcott exploring the political and human aspects of poverty and deprivation in middle America stand beside widely differing images of the growing metropolis by Berenice Abbott, Andreas Feininger and Lee Friedlander. The ‘pure’ sharp images of f/64 Group artists Ansel Adams and Edward Weston which impressed upon the world the image of a great and beautiful land live together with portraits of the marginalized by Larry Clark, Diane Arbus and her teacher Lisette Model. Together, they represent the melting pot that is America. American Icons presents the images and photographers that defined a century.
