An exhibition organized by the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes through the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Museo de Arte Moderno, in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey and with the cooperation of the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores and the Ministerio de Cultura de Colombia.

In keeping with its commitment to presenting Latin American art, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey will show this retrospective exhibition of the Colombian artist Ana Mercedes Hoyos, organized by the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes through INBA and the Museo de Arte Moderno, in collaboration with the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey and in conjunction with the Colombian ministries of External Affairs and Culture.

Nearly fifty works by the Colombian painter and sculptor, who was born in Bogotá in 1942, will be exhibited, surveying the last thirty-six years of her career. Her pictorial proposal, in small-, medium- and large-scale formats, calls attention to her masterfully executed and palpitating chromatic game, which is revealed in the subtle strokes seen in her charcoal on linen works.

The exhibition presents the work of an artist who has concentrated her interest, historically and anthropologically, on the cultural reality of her country. In doing so, the dark race, especially the people from Cartagena de Indias, a city where people of color are predominant, is a theme that she constantly recaptures with her brush moving from figurative to abstract.

Her vast output also includes other genres, such as still life inspired by the Colombian markets which by tribute to the legacy of the great masters of art history such as van Gogh, Caravaggio, Zurbarán, Cézanne, Jawlensky and Lichtenstein.

This is Hoyos' first international retrospective; an artist who has received high honors from governmental, cultural and educational institutions in her homeland.

Five themes are presented in the show exploring the various stages of her career from 1968 to the present: Windows and Landscapes, Atmospheres and Landscapes, Still Lifes, American Symbols and, finally, Cartagena de India, with its sub-themes that include Porcelains, Julia's Universe, Palenqueras and The Festival of San Basilio, her most recent work.
