press release

Although André Masson (Balagny, Oise, 1896 - Paris, 1987) shared Surrealist viewpoints and adventures from the beginning of the movement, disagreements with Breton and an increasingly close relationship with Bataille led him to break away from the group, earning him the nickname "the rebel of Surrealism". His special link with Spain underlines the importance of this major retrospective displaying the wealth and complexity of his work. While particular attention has been given to his painting, other aspects like collage, drawing, engraving and sculpture are included and the strong links he had with the literary and musical world are not forgotten.
