The stories to be shown in this exhibition deal with the reality which surrounds us, shaped with forms of representation that are not directly linked to analogy, but rather to fantasy and magic. Since our environment is more and more difficult to express, animation evokes or suggests it resorting to strategies that are sometimes ironic, sometimes lyrical and mostly fantastic.
The pieces selected place themselves in the limits of what can and cannot be said and of what is and isn’t adequate; by fantasy they regain the ability to bet on the different types of truth. And that is, essentially, a political task.
The animation films which have been chosen for this exhibition (whether as installation, multi-projection or single channel projection) have special relationships with the resources that are natural to the medium: caricature, anecdote, joke, satire, story, fable and allegory. But maybe parody –as the “symmetric opposite of fiction”– is the strategy that places animation cinema between reality and fiction. For the thirty-five artists that take part in this exhibition walking in the universe of parody is a gesture that can protect us from critical apathy and from the dizziness that the world surrounding us produces.
