Annemiek de Beer: Aurora

In De Kabinetten van De Vleeshal, Annemiek de Beer will be exhibiting her tranquil depictions of nature: flowers, trees, plants and ponds. De Beer’s paintings are composed of transparent layers of egg tempera. Each layer is allowed to show through, creating an interplay between fore- and background. The precision of her style brings to mind the simplicity and serenity of traditional Japanese painting and printing. But at the same time her work is expressionist and abstract – each brushstroke is the starting point for the next. Also characteristic of her style is the use of clear colours and her fascination for rhythm, structure and repetition. The title of the exhibition, Aurora (dawn), refers to the light that prominently features in her art: direct or indirect light, at different moments of the day, whether or not reflected in the water.

Annemiek de Beer’s work has gone through a remarkable transition. The realistic, harsh scenes (sometimes done in high-gloss paint) of her earlier work have made way for her current, more restrained and contemplative pieces. Annemiek de Beer (born 1971 in Bolsward, the Netherlands; lives and works in Rotterdam), studied at the Art Academy in Kampen, and De Ateliers. In 1996 she won the Royal Subsidy for Painting.

The opening of the exhibition will be held on Sunday, July 2 from 4 – 6 p.m.
