press release

We are proud to present Annika Larsson’s second solo show at the gallery and invite you to the premiere viewing of her new video work New Gravity. Annika Larsson, b.1972, lives and works in New York. She graduated from the Royal Academy in Stockholm 2000 and has had an exceptional international career since then. After winning the Baloise Art Prize for her video work Dog at Art Basel 2001, her work has been seen in solo shows at Andrea Rosen Gallery, New York, S.M.A.K, Gent, Centre pour l´image Contemporaine, Geneva and the ICA, London to name only a few.

Recently, she was the subject of solo show at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel, 2003 with an accompanying catalogue. This show will travel to the Kunsthalle Nürnberg and opens in March 2004. Tema Celeste published the artist book "Diary #2" about her work Pink Ball 2003 and she also participated at last year´s Istanbul Biennial with the work Blood

Her new video work New Gravity (29min 30sec, ed.6+1AP) explores themes such as gravitation and idolization and features for example teenagers and an animated 3D character on a dance floor. There is an underlying sense of violence in this work where legs and feet are in focus as well as the “geek look”.

As in her earlier video works, Annika Larsson here creates a manipulated reality in which she works against our expectations on what the image signifies and how we should decipher it.

The music in New Gravity is by Tobias Bernstrup and Moravagine (both also participate in the video).
