press release

In her first solo show in the UK the acclaimed Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof will present an adaptation of her Illy Prize nominated project Fragmented Entity shown in the 2011 edition of Art Rotterdam.

“Anouk Kruithof’s work is all about the framing. Her language is simple and light like the materials she uses, ranging from video, postcards, posters, stacks of paper, newspapers, books and (photo)prints. She takes photos and transfers the images across different surfaces and spaces, composing spatial mnemonic theatres in the form of minimal installations. What makes Kruithof’ s works different from pure conceptual speculations about the act of art creation is the affection for the tactile and sharing dimension of the pieces, as well as a longing for perpetual memory. We are not talking about semiotics, but rather of the human mind, with its pulsating emotions and seizing logic co-existing together.”(Nicolla Bozzi)

A stack of around 1000 handmade analogue C prints from the past 12 years provides the raw material for the comprehensive group of works called “Fragmented Entity”. Between 2008 and 2011 she has been cutting out the narrative of these old photographs and dissected them to abstract pieces of coloured photo paper. The new works are including variations of photographic representations on piles of paper, photos from photos, photo assemblages, heaps of shredded prints, respectively photographs or videos of these photographic shreds.

In her solo presentation at B&N gallery she will present a new large scale spatial installation called “Wall of fading memory”. The installation consists out of 103 different assemblages made out of photo paper, which have the form of flat coloured brick walls. These assemblages are hanging freely in the middle of the gallery space where through a multi-layered light and abstract ‘wall’ to see through arises as the space of colourful dreams.

Anouk Kruithof has had solo shows in FOAM Amsterdam, museum het Domein, Sittard NL, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin and galerie Adler, Frankfurt an Main. Her work includes group shows at KIT (kunst im tunnel) Düsseldorf, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Grimmuseum Berlin, ACP Sydney, DCC Shanghai, MAMAC Liege, Temporäre Künsthalle Berlin, Künstraum Niederösterreich Vienna.
