Originally produced in the late 1980s, the series Landscapes for the Homeless, will be exhibited in Hernandez’ upcoming show with the gallery. This series of images resonates with a distinctive formal clarity that brings sublime beauty to the discarded private spaces of society. Hernandez photographs the abandoned crevasses of the urban environment, putting forth a far less romantic image of a revered metropolis. Also exhibited will be new images by Hernandez documenting the building of the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at LACMA. Chosen as one of four artists to photograph its construction, Hernandez’s work, alongside Uta Barth, Miles Coolidge and Sharon Lockhart, will be combined to create a catalogue marking this historic event.
