press release

For the second time, VOUS ETES ICI presents a solo-exhibition of the successful German painter Anton Henning (Berlin, 1964). Henning works in a very pronounced way, even though numerous different motives pop up in his eclectic oeuvre. The (flower) still-life, the nude, the portrait and the interior, and each of these themes have abstract alternatives as well. They are of course very traditional art historical painterly subjects and Henning regularly refers to important predecessors like Courbet, Van Gogh, Matisse or Picabia. Colour, light and texture are important tools for Henning. In his figurative interior paintings the walls are always decorated with his own paintings, just like in 17th century counterparts. Where in the old days often a symbolic meaning was implied, Henning tends to tell a story with the selection of his own works that he includes in these interiors. In the abstract interiors the three-dimensional aspect is enhanced by the use of swerving lines, often carrying a shadow. Recently Henning turned to refer to the basic compositions of Piet Mondrian, neglecting though all his strict colour theories and sometimes adding figurative elements, such as a nude or a still-life. Although it might take some time to comprehend the full meaning of the artist's wide range of subjects, in the end the viewer will feel very welcome in Henning's underlying intuitive concept.

For Scrummage Anton Henning made an interior (Interieur No. 217) in the back room of the gallery, in which all aspects of his paintings return in three dimensions, including sitting light-elements (the so-called Mintrex's), a painted table and a generous wall-painting. The visitor now is able to literally step into Henning's world, to walk through it, to sit in it and to be a part of this wonderful environment full of colour, light, passion and emotion. Pressetext
