ARCOlisboa 2016

Lisbon will celebrate contemporary art with ARCOlisboa. On its first edition, to be held from 26 to 29 of May in the Fábrica Nacional da Cordoaria, the fair will provide a scenario in which to analyse and raise the profile of the high quality and diversity of the Portuguese art scene in an international context.

With the participation of 44 galleries selected by an Organising Committee particularly mindful of the quality and contents, ARCOlisboa will undertake a journey beginning in the 20th century and continuing to the most immediate present through the works of artists such as Joaquin Torres Garcia; Mario Merz; Dan Graham; Robert Barry; Julian Opie; Julião Sarmento; Joana Vasconcelos; Pedro Cabrita Reis; Juan Luis Moraza; Ignasi Aballí; Maria Loboda; Felipe Arturo or João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva.

ARCOlisboa will foster dialogues between local and foreign professionals in the Collecting Forum and the Institutions Forum, both open to the public and to be held in the Torreão Nascente – EGEAC space of the Cordoaria. Among others, Miguel Leal Rios will establish a conversation with Frédéric de Godschmidt and institutions such as Museu Serralves, Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Museu Coleção Berardo and Kunsthalle Lissabon, will create a discussion frame for curators and critics from around the world.

The forum will also host the presentation of the MAAT museum (Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia), by the Fundación EDP. Moreover, there will be a round table on the proposals of the highly active Portuguese non-profit spaces, in addition to presentations of other projects and publications. The initiative Walk with the curator will offer visits to ARCOlisboa guided by the curators Miguel von Hafe and Luiza Teixeira de Freitas, among others.

Five days in which the celebration of the Fair and visits to the city’s most active museums, institutions and collections such as António Cachola’s or Fundación Leal Rios will transform Lisbon into the contemporary art capital. The institutions will present exhibitions such as Enigma | Portuguese Art in the Berardo Collection, and the group exhibition Matter Fictions in the Museu Coleção Berardo; Depois, by André Cepeda, in the Museu Nacional de Arte Contermporanea do Chiado; Echolalia, by Ana Torfs and The Kumkapi carpets, in Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Additionally, there will be exhibitions of Portuguese artists in different spaces throughout the city such as Rui Chafes, in Museu Coleção Berardo; Pedro Calapez, in Fundação Carmona e Costa; Francisco Tropa, João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva, in Chiado 8 - Espaço Fidelidade Arte Contemporânea, or Julião Sarmento’s view of the artist Eduardo Batarda, in Pavilhão Branco and the possibility of visiting the ferry Trafaria Praia by Joana Vasconcelos.

In addition, Portugal’s independent scene will also play an important role with exhibitions in spaces such as Kunsthalle Lissabon, offering a show by Jacopo Miliani; Syntax, with Johana Pošová and Barbora Fastrová; Appleton Square, with José Loureiro and Francisco Tropa, and Carpe Diem and Hangar, showing group exhibitions.

As part of the programme, Lisbon galleries participating in the Fair will host the ARCOlisboa galleries’ brunch in their spaces in town.

ARCOlisboa, organised by IFEMA with the support iof the Portuguese Ministry of Culture; the Cámara Municipal de Lisboa and Turismo de Portugal, and with the collaboration of Café Pessoa in the public programmes, will open its doors to the public from 26 to 29 of May, from 12pm to 8pm (and until 6pm on the last day).
