ARCO Madrid 2020
26.02.2020 - 01.03.2020

Continuing to build on the fair’s critical and commercial success in recent years, ARCOmadrid 2020 has finalized its selection of participating galleries for the coming edition, which will take place in the Spanish capital February 26 — March 1, 2020.

Having seen a significantly increased number of applications this year, ARCOmadrid 2020 will offer a mix of returning international galleries — such as Hauser & Wirth, Thaddaeus Ropac, Luisa Strina, Chantal Crousel and Esther Schipper — along with a steadily growing number of high-calibre galleries joining or re-joining the fair, such as Perrotin, Nordenhake, Sies + Höke, Massimo and Francesa Minini, Buchholz, Jan Mot and Barbara Weiss.

At the same time, with a vigorous Spanish art market, all Spain’s major contemporary art galleries will be present at ARCOmadrid 2020. In addition, a growing number of galleries from across Spain such as; ATM, Art Nueve, Ángeles Baños, Fran Reus or Nordes will participate this year — offering a glimpse of Spain’s art work shown outside the major cities of Madrid and Barcelona.

In keeping with the fair’s increasingly innovative structure, ARCOmadrid 2020 — the 39th annual edition of the fair — will have a special thematic section as its centerpiece: this year’s section will be dedicated to the work and ongoing influence of Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Titled “It’s Just a Matter of Time”, the section will trace the influence of Gonzalez-Torres on a cross-generational group of artists working in a wide range of practices, focusing on how Gonzalez’s radical strategies toward spectator participation, political activism, emotional content and art distribution have become fundamental for understanding the art of the 21st century, according to the section’s curators Alejandro Cesarco and Mason Leaver-Yap.

Given its unique position bridging the European and Latin American art worlds, ARCOmadrid 2020 will continue to offer a special platform for Latin American artists— including those based in other parts of the world — throughout the fair’s General Section, as well as in curated programs such as Dialogues, curated by Agustín Pérez-Rubio and Lucía Sanromán, and Openings, curated by Tiago de Abreu Pinto and Övul Ö. Durmusoglu.

As has become a hallmark of the fair, ARCOmadrid 2020 will continue to host its highly anticipated program of professional activities, inviting critics, curators, collectors, museum directors and major art world figures to participate in a wide-ranging program of panel discussions and professional encounters. This year a special emphasis will be placed on a series of Artists Talks, with invited artists sharing their thoughts on their practices, projects and current concerns in a series of conversations with curators and critics.

In addition ArtsLibris, an international section dedicated to artists books and contemporary art publishing, will return to ARCOmadrid 2020, and will also include a series of lectures and panel discussions focusing on art publishing today.
