Ari Marcopoulos

During the month of February, the Rena Bransten Gallery will exhibit photographs by Sonoma based artist Ari Marcopoulos.

Ari Marcopoulos' new work continues his long term documentation of his own family offering an insight into a more private aspect of the artist's life. Like his compelling images of snowboarding, skateboarding, hip-hop and other groups operating outside the cultural mainstream, these new photographs evince an almost anthropological objectivity and thoroughness. Manifesting a sensibility more painterly than photographic, Marcopoulos' supersaturated images capture the unfamiliar or enigmatic in the everyday life of his subjects, creating the necessary detachment for viewing such intimate moments.

Marcopoulos was born in 1957 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and lives in Sonoma, California. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Interview, Blind Spot, and most major snowboarding magazines such as Transworld Snowboarding and Snowboarder. Recently the subject of a solo exhibition at PS1, Long Island City, New York, a survey exhibition of Marcopoulos' work is being organized by MU, in Eindhoven, The Netherlands (2006). Even the President of the United States sometimes has got to stand naked was published by JP Ringier to coincide with Marcopoulos' PS1 exhibition.
