Art Basel in Asia

Art Basel returns to Hong Kong in March 2017 for its fifth edition, with 241 premier galleries from 34 countries and territories, as well as a new curatorial sector, Kabinett. This year’s show, whose Lead Partner is UBS, features 29 new galleries and will present works of the highest quality, ranging from the early 20th century to contemporary artists. Half of the participating galleries have exhibition spaces in Asia and the Asia Pacific region, making Art Basel in Hong Kong an unparalleled showcase for art from this region.

Galleries, the main sector of the show, will feature 189 galleries specializing in modern and contemporary art. In addition to a strong list of returning galleries, Alfonso Artiacoand, Bergamin & Gomide, Galerie Buchholz, Galeria Fortes Vilaça, König Galerie, kurimanzutto, Luxembourg & Dayan, The Third Line and Waddington Custot will exhibit for the first time with Art Basel in Hong Kong, while Karma International and Timothy Taylor return to the Galleries sector after a brief hiatus. Having previously shown in Insights or Discoveries, Antenna Space, Galerie Isabella Bortolozzi, Experimenter, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Liang Gallery, Mujin-to Production and Pi Artworks have graduated to the Galleries sector, where they will present a wider range of their gallery programs.

The Insights sector will be dedicated to curatorial projects by 27 galleries, of which eight are completely new to the show: Aicon Gallery, C-Space, Hive Center for Contemporary Art, imura art gallery, Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery, Mind Set Art Center, Sundaram Tagore Gallery and The Third Gallery Aya. Insights will feature solo shows, exceptional historical material and strong thematic group exhibitions. This unique sector illustrates Asian art history by presenting the work of important artists from Asia and the Asia Pacific region.

Art Basel in Hong Kong has seen a notable increase in applications to the Discoveries sector of its 2017 show, resulting in the strongest selection of solo and two-person exhibitions ever presented in this sector. 12 of the 25 galleries participating will be completely new to the show: A+ Contemporary, Athena Contemporânea, Bank, Thomas Brambilla, Clearing, Dittrich & Schlechtriem, High Art, Jhaveri Contemporary, Kadel Willborn, mor charpentier, Project Native Informant and Various Small Fires.

For the first time, Art Basel will introduce the Kabinett sector to its Hong Kong show. A highlight of Art Basel in Miami Beach, Kabinett sees galleries present a specially curated project in a separate area within their booths, ranging from one person shows, thematic group exhibitions, installations, film/video programs to historical exhibitions.
