Art Copenhagen 2011

When Scandinavia’s leading art fair for international contemporary art opens its doors on 16 September, it will boast an impressive 81 galleries – this means that Forum, which is the venue for the fair, can report a full house.

16-18 September will be a weekend of contemporary art – a total of 81 of Scandinavia’s leading galleries are gathering in Copenhagen. Again this year, Art Copenhagen has successfully ensured a massive number of galleries from the Nordic countries, with 29 of the exhibitors coming from Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Faeroe Islands and Iceland. Meanwhile, the Danish art scene is represented with 52 galleries.

Forum Copenhagen’s Sales and Project Manager Henriette Dybkær says: “We are extremely satisfied with the influx of galleries this year from both Denmark and abroad, and it means that Forum will be well and truly filled with everything that the current art scene has to offer. The fact that so many galleries have expressed an interest in the fair means that we have been able to make the requirements even more stringent. The art which can be seen and experienced at this year’s fair is top quality and close to the level found at other international art fairs, and we are thus proud to present an interesting platform for visitors as well as gallery owners, collectors and artists.”

Lautom Contemporary from Oslo, Björkholmen Gallery from Stockholm and the Copenhagen gallery Andersen’s Contemporary are on board for the first time, while visitors can look forward to regulars such as the Stockholm gallery Andréhn-Schiptjenko and the Malmö gallery Elastic, the Finnish gallery Galeria Anhava and the Icelandic gallery I8, which is bringing works by Olafur Eliasson to this year’s fair. The Danish galleries include Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, V1 Gallery, Galleri Christina Wilson, Nils Stærk and Galleri Nicolai Wallner.

In addition to visiting the galleries’ stands, it is also possible to get a feel for current trends within contemporary art through Art Copenhagen’s programme of stage events. For example, Sunday’s stage programme will be devoted to performance art featuring debates with the artist Bjørn Nørgaard and the critic Monna Dithmer etc. as well as a performance programme with young artists very making a name for themselves such as Jette Hye Jin Mortensen and Kingimars.

Art Copenhagen – The Nordic Art Fair is being held for the 15th time, having existed in its present form since 1997. In 2010, the fair was attended by a record number of guests when 13,000 people visited Art Copenhagen. The fair is owned by Forum Copenhagen, which together with a fair committee is responsible for artistic management as well as selecting the participating galleries. This year the fair committee is made up of the gallery owners Bo Bjerggaard, Jesper Elg, Christina Wilson and Ola Gustafsson as well as art collectors Leif Djurhuus and Jens Peter Brask.

The fair will take place in Forum Copenhagen.
