Artes Mundi 7

Artes Mundi 7, the most ambitious and exciting contemporary visual art exhibition in Wales and the largest art prize in the UK, opens on October 21, 2016 in two Cardiff venues—The National Museum and Chapter.

Artes Mundi features the work of groundbreaking international artists whose practices explore current social issues around the theme of "The Human Condition." The six artists shortlisted for Artes Mundi 7 are John Akomfrah, Neïl Beloufa, Amy Franceschini/Futurefarmers, Lamia Joreige, Nástio Mosquito and Bedwyr Williams.

The shortlist was selected by a panel of three international curators, Élise Atangana, Alistair Hudson and Marie Muracciole who considered over 800 nominations before narrowing the list down to six names.

One of the artists will be awarded the 40,000 GBP Artes Mundi 7 Prize on January 26, 2017.

Previous winners of the Artes Mundi Prize were Theaster Gates, Teresa Margolles, Yael Bartana, NS Harsha, Eija-Lisa Ahtila and Xu Bing.

Karen MacKinnon, Artes Mundi’s Director and Curator, said, “Artes Mundi 7 brings together the work of six outstanding international artists. Through their work they examine important topical issues such as migration, technology, global power structures, the environment, capitalism and globalisation. These artists question what it means to be human in our complex, contemporary world. In works that explore the current situation in Angola, fictional future cities, the politics of food production or migration from Syria to Beirut, there is humour, surrealism and provocation. But what connects this diverse exhibition is relevance and urgency, as they comment on and question the spirit of the age."
