Aspects of the Collection corresponds to a selection of Workgroups featuring very diverse authors, periods and styles.

Opening and ending this exhibition we find two series by António Areal; A História Dramática de um Ovo and Fantasma de Avignon, both dating from 1967.

In the installation created by Francisco Tropa for CAM in 2003 (L'Orage) and whose scale models are now on display, the artist presented five apparently independent ambulatory spaces; it became clear that one place can be experienced in different dimensions: a place with walls, an image, written words, passages, stagings, viewpoints, impossibility, awkwardness, or memory.

The Modern Art Centre holds a large number of 1960's drawings by Manuel Cargaleiro. These are medium- and small-format works in which he uses techniques as varied as markers, colour pencil, pastel, watercolour, gouache, pencil, etc. The lyrical tone of these works suggests landscapes or entirely abstract surfaces.

Ca. 1910, Armando Basto creates a series of oil portraits on cardboard or canvas, whose sitters are mostly unidentified. At the time he was living in Paris, where he contributed to with some leaflet publications with humoristic drawings. His paintings frequently represent sitting men featuring a thoughtful expression, closed up or lost in shyness and in sadness.

The estate of Cristino da Silva, of which a small selection of drawings is displayed here, was donated to the Foundation by the architect's family in the middle of the 1980's. It is constituted by professional, academic and personal documents: ca. 9000 architectural drawings pertaining to 114 projects; 2100 photographic specimens, textual documents, postcards and art originals; and 526 monographs and periodicals.

In the drawings by Michael Biberstein (Paint It Black series) a black sinuous and undulating line creates a sort of horizon line around which a spectre of various colours vibrates. The latter enlarges the space of the line, initially assumed as a structural element, but does not distance itself from it, appearing as if imprisoned by its magnetic field.

Fascinated by the capturing of some important public personalities in situations of conquered intimacy, Pepe Diniz, gathered an important group of portraits during the 1970's and 1980's. Among the sitters we find, for example Man Ray, Jorge Luís Borges, Robert Rauchenberg, John Cage, Salvador Dali, Peter Brook or Roy Lichtenstein. National figures include Sarah Afonso, Dourdil, Júlio Resende, Eunice Muñoz, Jorge Martins, etc.

Arnold Böcklin's Island of the Dead was one of Fernando Calhau's favourite classic paintings. Calhau himself created personal versions of the scene. In addition to these two paintings form 1993/94, the exhibition features a group of small-format works in the manner of the minimal processes characteristically used by Calhau, calling for simple geometry, media cut-outs, and the use of black, grey and rust as colours. Red, more rarely used throughout his career, is also featured here.
