Baloise Art Prize is an annual award, handed out to two young artists at Art Basel. The award-winning work is given to two important museums in Europe, the Stedelijk Museum Voor Actuele Kunst, Gent, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle. This year the work ‘Big Umbrella’ by Aleksandra Mir was donated to S.M.A.K.. Her works often takes the form of social processes that are open to anyone that wishes to give it meaning. The work is often started by Mir as a situation-bound alliance between specific events, and the work's location. For her project 'The Big Umbrella', a gigantic, fully functional umbrella was constructed, which was large enough to cover 16 people. Equipped with this oversized item, she travelled to various cities. In her actions, photographs, objects and documents, Aleksandra Mir humorously chronicles everyday life and cohabitation.
