This exhibition from IMMA's Collection looks at the ways in which artists engage with the landscape in order to address the question of mans place in the world. Attempting to find their bearings in the world, artists constantly break new ground and challenge traditional ways of framing the landscape. Political issues of land ownership, colonisation, mapping and borders are addressed by artists such as Willie Doherty and Kathy Prendergast while paintings of land and sea by Sean Fingleton present a dramatic reading of nature and its elemental forces. More abstract depictions of the landscape are presented by Sean Scully and Patrick Scott. Vong Phaophanit's installation Neon Rice Field integrates both traditional cultural methods of farming and the urbanisation of the landscape while Hamish Fulton and Richard Long engage directly with the earth, their activities in the landscape being essential to the finished artwork.
