Benoit Platéus (b. 1972) uses a variety of media which he sometimes mixes together. His drawings and even his sculptures often show similarities to doodling, those scribblings, figures, spots or shading with which one unthinkingly keeps oneself busy while on the phone, in the cafe or in the classroom.

Platéus, with an intentional naivete and a lot of messing around, balances between form and formlessness, and between meaningless scribbling and a legible image. Platéus also collects drawings, photos and writings in the form of photocopied ‘low-budget’ magazines which he circulates through an informal network. In contrast to such visual elements as line, point, texture and colour, words are by definition bearers of meaning. The artist disrupts this by knocking words together in such a way that they seem like clumsy translations. In his photos and objects he misleads the viewer by, for example, increasing or decreasing the scale. His art often functions as an ‘appareil psychique’ (one of the concepts taken from psychology which occasionally appears in his work) which plays on, questions and reflects the viewer’s perception and realisation.
