press release

In the autumn of 2014, the S.M.A.K. will be staging a solo exhibition by Berlinde De Bruyckere (Ghent, 1964), her most extensive one-person show yet. The museum is presenting a carefully chosen selection of installations, sculptures and designs from various stages of her artistic career, from the 1990s to the present-day. The exhibition highlights the formal variety of her work, while displaying the recurrent symbols, references (literature, cinema, old masters such as Lucas Cranach and Antonello da Messina) and themes (strength and vulnerability, oppression and protection, aversion and beauty). This presentation will also include the ‘Kreupelhout – Cripplewood’ (2013) installation, Berlinde De Bruyckere's contribution to the 55th Venice Biennale in cooperation with the S.M.A.K.

An extensive oeuvre catalogue, produced in cooperation with the Mercatorfonds, will be published to coincide with the exhibition.
