Birgit Werres

Chisenhale Gallery’s first exhibition in 1996 features the work of Birgit Werres. It is the first time that Werres has shown her work in the UK. Previously she has had solo exhibitions at galleries in Cologne and Hamburg, and, in 1992, at the Museum Abteiberg, Monchengladbach.

At Chisenhale Gallery, Werres will show approximately eight pieces, characteristically made from basic industrial materials: metal pipes and cables, wood, plastic sheeting, foam and rubber. Cut to length, wrapped, layered and combining hard and soft elements, these materials form the rich vocabulary of Werres’ sculpture.

With a sense of formal discipline and a keen eye for colour and texture, Werres’ sculpture makes a strong visceral impact. Alluding both to biomorphic forms and to industrial processes, her work takes a quizzical look at the post-industrial world.

Born in Stommeln, Germany in 1962, Werres studies in the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf with Tony Cragg. She lives and works in Dusseldorf.
