press release

British Art Show 6 - the most ambitious survey of recent art in the UK - opens at BALTIC on 24 September 2005. The exhibition presents work by 50 artists and artists’ groups who together represent the breadth and vitality of current British practice. Curated by Alex Farquharson and Andrea Schlieker, British Art Show 6 incorporates work across a range of practices from sculpture, painting, film and video to performance, with a number of artists working across several disciplines. The exhibition opens at BALTIC, the only venue to house the entire exhibition under one roof, and then travels to multiple venues across the cities of Manchester, Nottingham and Bristol. British Art Show 6 is a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition which takes place every five years.

British Art Show 6 goes beyond the usual conventions of a touring exhibition, evolving as it moves to each host city. It features several commissions for projects in the public realm, a live art programme, and works that respond to the venues, cities and audiences on the tour. British Art Show 6 at BALTIC includes three high profile off-site commissions, funded by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, the organisation which has developed and co-ordinated a wider festival of visual arts in NewcastleGateshead, coinciding with British Art Show 6.

Speaking about the exhibition, the curators of British Art Show 6 commented: “We noticed several interlocking themes that characterise much of the art we encountered – there are frequent references to specific moments in the history of modernism; several artists are engaging with international politics from a personal perspective, and collaborations are increasingly sought with people and organisations beyond the art institution. References to architecture, the urban environment, landscape and ecology are equally prevalent”.

In developing the shortlist for British Art Show 6, the curators Andrea Schlieker and Alex Farquharson travelled extensively throughout the UK and considered work by over 500 artists. For the first time since the British Art Show was launched in 1979, 50% of the artists featured in the exhibition are women and 50% were born outside the UK. The curators went on to say: “It is a particularly exciting moment for us to assemble this exhibition, as the art scene in Britain is now broader in outlook, more vibrant and internationally oriented than at any other time in the British Art Show’s history.”

Arts organisations, artist-led groups and arts venues across NewcastleGateshead are showcasing a wide-range of new and innovative work during this period.
