press release

One of the most influential artists living in the US today, Bruce Nauman challenges the parameters of contemporary art through his use of nontraditional materials. Nauman’s work in neon signs and fluorescent light installations from 1965-1985, explores the twists and turns of perception, logic and meaning with an earnest playfulness that characterizes his art. His early neon signs from the 1960s focus on identity, while his later word game neons evoke poetry that cuts to the essence of the human condition. The two fluorescent light environments in the exhibition use mirrors and illumination to create oblique spaces that distort perception. The exhibition will be on view during Art Basel Miami Beach.

Elusive Signs: Bruce Nauman Works With Light is organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum and is curated by Joseph D. Ketner II. Following its presentation at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, the exhibition will be on view at Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, 2007; Musee d’art contemporain de Montreal, 2007, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Victoria, 2007, and Queensland Art Gallery, Australia, 2008.
