Cabin Fever

Cabin Fever New Drawings explores drawing as a solitary practice. This group show exhibits new work by seven artists whose often hermetic engagements with drawing advance their private experiments and fantasies. From Christopher Garrett’s deadpan Untitled series, where drawing becomes synonymous with the ultimate solitude - suicide, to Sahra Motalebi’s imagined mythologies and Shara Hughes invented vacant interiors, these works understand the plane as a space for the elaboration of idiosyncratic personal languages.

Drawing on a range of influences, these artists often turn to other media (including film, folk traditions, and the history of science) in the development of their respective artistic attitudes. Michael Wang’s three-dimensional drawings touch on the relationship between nature, technology, and individual perception; Eamon Ore-Giron’s work, reminiscent of imagined artifacts and organic shapes, suggests folk art patterns and textiles while his sources ultimately remain obscure. In Blaze Lamper’s Autumn Storms the Monument, the fragmentation of movement alludes to cinematic montage, as Megan Marrin’s uxoricidal denouement takes inspiration from a dream sequence in FW Murnau’s Sunrise.

The format of the group show does not inaugurate a collective movement or even a style, but rather acknowledges the incommensurability of these varied practices and can only offer the bittersweet promise of “a community of solitudes”.
