Carlos Damacio. Derrotero Australis

In Derrotero Australis, Carlos Damacio invites us to reflect on the representation of the peoples and the southern territory during the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, with engravings that reflect on the exploration, occupation and genocide of the original inhabitants of Patagonia.

From etching (maintaining its technical foundations from the 16th century), and taking up the iconography, the artist contemporarily executes a series of engravings that think about the myth of the search for the City of the Caesars, a city hidden in the Patagonian mist and protected from humanity. Derrotero Australis situates the viewer between fiction and reality, proposing an allegory of a possible reality, a utopia of an imaginary world where there was resistance on the part of the southern peoples and ethnic groups to the explorations in search of this rich enchanted city, and where the genocide that devastated them did not occur.
