CIRCUS HEIN

JEPPE HEIN is in residence at the Atelier Calder (Saché) from September 2009 to January 2010. For the occasion of his residency at the Atelier Calder, Jeppe Hein developed a new project titled “CIRCUS HEIN” in relation with the arts of the circus and specifically with Calder’s Circus. Jeppe Hein invited thirty visual artists, designers, architects, photographers, performers… to participate in this project’s conception. All these artists will perform acts inspired by traditional circus routines: acrobats, jugglers, clowns, fanfare… Sets (wallpapers), costumes and new forms of architecture will be developed (big tops, pylon signs), circus sculptures made out of found materials or circus props, reused in unusual ways. Programs and the posters printed for this occasion will be illustrated with the iconography of the circus. Pop corn, cotton candy and culinary performances will also be on offer.

Like all circuses, the “Circus Hein” will go on tour; the 1st performance date will take place on Saturday December 12, 2009 at the FRAC in Orleans and at the Atelier Calder in Saché.

Afterwards, the “CIRCUS HEIN” will continue touring to the Open Space at Art Cologne (April 2010)… and so on. Jeppe Hein

Born in 1974 in Copenhagen, Jeppe Hein studied at the Royal Academy of Arts of this city and at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfort. He lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. He participated in Venice Biennale in 2003, hand showed his work at the National Museum of Modern Art of the Centre Pompidou in 2006, at the Staten Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, at the FRAC Lorraine in Metz, Estuaire in Nantes in 2007, at the Tate Modern in London in 2007 and at the Singapore Biennale in 2008. A monographic exhibition is currently dedicated to him at ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum in Denmark until February 21, 2010.

Jeppe Hein’s installations establish a dialogue between the spectator, the artwork and the exhibition space. Very often in his arrangements, the spectator is called upon to activate the artwork, or conversely his absence triggers an event. Jeppe Hein has great fun undermining conventions, the spectator is not just there to admire the work, but rather becomes an integral part of it. His works also disrupt the field of the public space (concourses, museum and gallery exhibition spaces, etc.), by taking on the appearance of minimalist and geometric objects or discreet installations, going as far as to blend with the layout and organization of the museum.
