press release

Juergen Teller was announced as the winner of the £20,000 Citibank Photography Prize 2003. Teller received the Award from the BBC Presenter Jeremy Vine. The three other finalists Bertien van Manen, Jitka Hanzlová and Simon Norfolk also received cheques for £2,000. Sanjeeb Chaudhuri, Managing Director of Citibank congratulated Teller for winning the 2003 Prize and thanked him for his outstanding contribution to the world of photography.

The Jury, who consisted of Frits Gierstberg, Paul Mellor and Brett Rogers, chose Teller for the strength of the Märchenstüberl work and in particular its installation at The Photographers' Gallery. They commented on the intelligent, provocative and witty presentation of Teller's work and his ability to explore photography at its most manifest.

This year, The Photographers' Gallery is delighted to welcome Citigroup's consumer bank, Citibank as the new sponsor of the Prize. Citibank's commitment to the development of the award is reflected in the increase in total Prize money to £26,000 for 2003 from £21,000 in 2002. They continue from the Citigroup Private Bank who have generously sponsored the Prize since its inception in 1996.
