Claude Nori
05.09.2012 - 04.11.2012

Claude Nori occupies a very unique place in the history of French photography with his photographic work he has been doing since 1968 but also thanks to the Contrejour editions he founded in 1975 to publish his first book.

The Contrejour editions enabled a whole generation of contemporary authors to express themselves for the first time through the support of the book which, together with the exhibitions, constituted the original creative space of the new French photography.

He brought to light the humanists and some of the greatest French or foreign photographers then in oblivion (Doisneau, Sieff, Ronis, Plossu, Boubat, Ghirri, Querrec, Petersen, Giacomelli, Salgado ...) founded the journals Cahiers Photography and Camera International, opened a gallery, published more than 150 books, which still refer today, thus being at the heart of the great upheaval that led photography to its golden age.

At the same time, he has never stopped practicing his work as a photographer-photographer with a succession of books around his favorite subjects: Italy, adolescence, seaside poetry, a certain epiphanical search for happiness and love. love with which he dug the furrow of "photobiography".

This exhibition brings together for the first time the editorial adventure of Contrejour over nearly twenty years around his major books and the personal work of Claude Nori and restores the special atmosphere of this era of freshness and discovery that took part many critics, historians or writers, who were mostly fellow travelers and friends. The exhibition "Claude Nori, publisher and photographer" is co-produced by the MEP and the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles.
