Opening Reception: Thursday, February 20th, 6–8 p.m.

Plane Space is delighted to present the work of Claudia Schmacke. The exhibition opens Wednesday, February 19th, and continues through Sunday, March 23rd. A reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, February 20th, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Claudia Schmacke is a German installation artist. Using thousands of feet of clear tubing and water pumps, her work is at once static and kinetic. Water and air travel through the many lengths of hose, creating spirals or spans of motion depending on the site. The resulting combination, of motionless tubing juxtaposed with the fluidity and sinuous motion of the water and pockets of air within, is beautiful and hypnotic.

Born and raised in Germany, Schmacke received her B.F.A. from Kassel University and earned her M.F.A. from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In addition to exhibiting consistently and extensively through solo and group shows in Germany, Schmacke’s work has been presented in Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway, and the United States. Among her awards, Schmacke has had artist residencies at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa Texas, the Bemis Foundation in Omaha, Nebraska, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York, and Smack-Mellon Studios in Brooklyn.
