Cameron Martin (American, born 1970) is a painter based in Brooklyn. His work is influenced by sources as diverse as German romanticism, 19th century photography, Japanese ukiyo-e prints, and Pop Art. Martin is interested in representations of nature and contemporary culture’s shifting relationship to notions of the sublime.

Though at one time landscape painting may have evoked a fear of the infinite, Martin’s landscapes provide something more akin to a fear of loss. While mass media representations of nature often depict landscapes as terrain waiting to be conquered or overcome, Martin’s quiet, contemplative scenes induce feelings of mourning.

Martin studied art and semiotics at Brown University, from which he graduated magna cum laude. He also completed the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York. His work has been included in the Whitney Biennial, and in group shows at venues including Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, Seattle Art Museum, and Space 101 in Brooklyn. Martin is represented by Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, New York.

Currents 97: Cameron Martin is part of a series of exhibitions featuring the work of contemporary artists. The series is supported by the Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Endowment Fund, which was established to support the exhibition and acquisition of contemporary art at the Art Museum and to support the teaching principles of contemporary art at the Washington University School of Art.

This exhibition is curated by Robin Clark, associate curator of contemporary art, and is on view in Gallery 337 from March 24 through June 18, 2006.
