Arthouse at the Jones Center presents the first major survey exhibition for artist Daniel Bozhkov. The survey brings together 7 works from the previous 10 years, including the spectacular, multi-dimensional works How To Fly Over a Very Large Larry, Training in Assertive Hospitality, and the recent Eau d’Ernest - a piece awarded tremendous recognition at the 9th Istanbul Bienniale. The exhibition will also feature a newly commissioned work for Arthouse entitled Cantata for Twelve Choirs and Several Salamanders, filmed in collaboration with Austin-based artist, Cauleen Smith. The exhibition will travel to the Atlanta Center for Contemporary Art and the Art Gallery at the University of North Texas, Denton – both galleries will feature work created especially for their spaces.

Daniel Bozhkov is a Bulgarian-born, New York-based artist who for the past several years has realized projects taking various forms from ambitious interventions, media events, to discrete objects, paintings, and photographs. Given Bozhkov’s fine art training, his conceptually-driven work is often anchored by a traditional craft or skill, converging old world and new world practices in order to pursue new meaning, surprising connections and provoke philosophical inquiry. The site-specific works are manifested through months of research and engagement with a particular locale. Positioning himself as an interlocutor/ visitor he seeks to introduce new strains of meaning and focus attention into seemingly closed systems by looking at social/environmental/cultural phenomenon unique to each location.

In addition to the exhibition, a 2-part catalog will be produced. The first book will survey Bozhkov’s previous works and will include essays by Regine Basha, Diana Block and Vasif Kortun, Director, Platform, Istanbul. The second book, to be published at the end of the tour, will highlight the new works produced during the artist’s Texas-based research, and will act as a compendium of research notes, ephemera, conversations and images related to Bozhkov’s process of production.

About the Artist New York-based, Daniel Bozhkov studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria where he was trained in the traditional painting techniques of fresco, egg tempera and oil painting and completed graduate studies in Fine Arts at Hunter College in New York City. He teaches at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Columbia University and Yale University. Bozhkov works and exhibits nationally and internationally.
