P.S.1 presents works by British artist David Remfry (b. 1942), who is known for his strange and beautiful figurative watercolor paintings. Remfry's portraits and party scenes capture the "in-between" moments: such as women whispering in a crowd, dancers letting go of one another or people gazing at their own bodies. In these intimate, sensual images, nearly life-sized figures often seem to make eye contact with the viewer from the edge of the canvas, while others appear to look away deliberately. Remfry's unusual composition adds a sense of spontaneity to the works that ultimately heightens their emotional charge and presents these scenes as windows on passing worlds.
