De bortbjudna – Malmö Art Museum

Rooseum is delighted to be able to showcase the outstanding contemporary Nordic art collection purchased by Malmö Art Museum in the last years. Without doubt, this is one of the finest collections of such work anywhere and the curators at Rooseum have had a unique opportunity to curate a show drawing on its contemporary strengths. It will be a wonderful opportunity to show it in the open and flexible space of the Rooseum's main hall and to present to the Malmö public some of the most outstanding works bought for the city for the first time.

We can be proud of the rich ecology of visual art institutions in Malmö, not only exhibition halls but also an excellent art academy and smaller artists initiatives through the city. By working together to provide a unique opportunity to see the art museum's collection in depth, Rooseum and Malmö Art Museum are seeking to strengthen the vitality of the local situation and increase the awareness of the city’s creative wealth in the rest of Sweden and elsewhere. Paralleling this exhibition at Rooseum, the Malmö Art Museum will be showing a group of the new generation of Malmö artists in its own exhibition spaces.

This will also be a chance for Rooseum to renew our tradition of showing the Frederik Roos Collection by making a selection of artworks produced after his tragic early death in 1991. The main part of the Rooseum's selection has been produced during the 90s and unsurprisingly there is a great collection of video works in the exhibition – partly presented in a film program in the Microcinema – but also an important selection of photography. An installation, objects, some paintings, a few drawings and collage are also represented. Varied field of questions, standpoints and representations are brought up by the different works, including social commentary, gender politics, institutional critique and everyday issues. The exhibition will also include a retrospective view of works from the 60s and the 70s with a special relevance to works from the 90s and today, including Marie-Louise Ekman, Öyvind Fahlström and Sture Johannesson.
