DESACUERDOS. On art, politics and the public sphere in Spain is a joint production by Arteleku-Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa, Universidad Internacional de Andalucía-UNIA arteypensamiento and MACBA, which springs from a desire to erect a historiographic “countermodel” that will go beyond the official academic discourse on the art of the second half of the 20th century and help lay some foundations for the reconstruction of a critical public cultural sphere. The project has been constituted in a decentralised structure with network cooperation between cultural institutions of different kinds, which puts into practice work dynamics which go beyond the institutional boundaries so that other critical spheres of culture can operate. DESACUERDOS a research and documentation programme, a group of public meetings and shows which will give exposure to the projects and artistic practices studied, an exhibition and a series of publications.

DESACUERDOS sets out to trace cultural practices, models and countermodels that do not correspond to the dominant organisations, policies and practices that have followed one another in Spain over more than four decades. The aim of this project is to draft a critical history of those structures and attitudes, which remain instituted in the administration model of culture and art. In short, a twofold exercise that investigates both the links between cultural and institutional policies, art, the market and the economy, the public sphere, civil society and counterhegemonic ideas in Spain and the possibility of generating a social and institutional network that can collect, connect and pool the cultural experiences and situations that have arisen or are arising.

DESACUERDOS. On art, politics and the public sphere in Spain is an exposure of the process of investigation begun in 2003 by the institutions behind the project, Arteleku, MACBA and UNIA, and the exhibitions that will be held at two venues at the same time: the Centro José Guerrero in Granada and MACBA in Barcelona, as complementary projects.

These exhibitions are structured from the lines of the research and divided into three broad sections: Archive 69 as a documentary record of counterhegemonic practices, the power lines that reveal the dynamics behind the banality of the seventies, the mercantilism of the eighties and the spectacle of the nineties, as well as their paradoxes and contradictions, and lastly the case studies as analyses focused on highly significant specific phenomena and situations on the art scene over the last few decades. From there they present a historical route divided between two great moments. Along broad lines, the first covers the seventies and the second the eighties-nineties. The turning point is 1982, with the election of the Socialist government and the appearance of ARCO.

The exhibitions give pride of place to the notion of archive and document to illustrate that creative practices cannot be reduced to the reigning models at any particular moment, but flow independent of momentary tastes and trends, dominant ideologies or generic models. An important chapter will be occupied by debates, encounters and activities to give a voice to protagonists, scholars and critics of the key moments of that historical period, so close and yet so far away.

The exhibition at MACBA will include works by Preiswert Arbeitskolleguen, Eugènia Balcells, C.V.A., Juan del Campo, Estrujenbank, Esther Ferrer, Ferran Garcia Sevilla, José María Giro, Eulàlia Grau, Grup de Treball, Juan Hidalgo, Concha Jerez, Joaquim Jordà, Familia Lavapiés, Rogelio López Cuenca, Antoni Miralda, Indymedia da, Fina Miralles, Muntadas, Pere Noguera, Pere Portabella, Agustín Parejo School, Joan Rabascall, Francisco Ruiz de Vergara, Francesc Torres, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina, Video-Nou, Paulino Viota, and Zaj, among others. The show will also have fanzines, comics, publishing experiments, independent radios and televisions, experimental poetry, video, etc.
