press release

This exhibition offers a decade-long perspective on contemporary visual practices in India, presenting works dating from 1993 to present that speak in a rich array of materials and idioms. The exhibition includes 80 works by more than 30 artists—representing three generations—working across sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video and interactive media. Works of internationally recognized contemporary artists are shown alongside those of India’s most innovative younger artists. All participating artists are from India and they live and work there. The exhibition provides unique opportunities to explore cross-cultural influences in the works of these artists. Drawing upon artworks from major public and private collections, Edge of Desire features illuminating juxtapositions of urban fine art with adivasi art and ephemeral Bollywood and popular culture imagery. The exhibition also includes several collaborative and site-specific works that address contemporary political, social, and environmental realities in India today.

The exhibition is organized by the Art Gallery of Western Austrarla and Asia Society, New York.

Edge of Desire: Recent Art in India is co-presented at the Asia Society located at 725 Park Avenue, New York
