Eduardo Chillida: Space, gravity and earth

The Chillida-Leku Museum and the "la Caixa" Foundation have joined forces to present a monographic exhibition on Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924 - 2002) that you will be able to see at the gallery that the aforementioned foundation runs in Palma de Mallorca. The exhibition, that displays a large set of sculptures, pieces in relief, drawings and graphic work, reviews the multifaceted artist’s career from 1980 to 2000, which was a period in which we can see a shift in Chillida’s artistic output. From the 1980s onwards he began to take an interest in new materials to produce his pieces in concrete, terra-cotta, old woods...- and to research in greater depth into questions to do with space, such as the relationship between artworks and their surroundings or the architectural aspects of both elements.

"Chillida. 1980-2000", that can be visited at CaixaForum Palma until the 24th of February, aims to draw the public’s attention to two kinds of pieces that the artist worked on during this period: the clay “lurras”: sculptures made with a material that Chillida had initially refused to work with but which he finally ended up becoming fascinated by due to its sound and texture; and the “gravitations” which were paper compositions in which he studied its spatial capacities by using layers that were placed on top of each other with using glue; they were generally supported on strings that allowed them to "gravitate". We can see in this artistic evolution that covers a period of twenty years how the shapes become increasingly denser and more compact, and how the spaces that they hide become smaller to reveal nooks and crannies for metaphysical meditation, while they become increasingly more organic and refer on the one hand to the extraordinary importance of keeping our roots, and on the other, to how vital it is to be open to all kinds of innovative proposals.
