press release

The main motif of MuHKA's 2005 spring campaign is none other than the renewed actuality and urgency of emotional engagement in contemporary art. On emotions, feelings & sentiments – and their role in the construction of the contemporary art experience.

The Emotion Pictures programme comprises an exhibition, a symposium, a film programme and a double AS publication (the quarterly MuHKA media magazine). The first event is the Emotion Pictures exhibition, which will open on 19 March 2005.

The focus of this presentation is the question about the place of feelings and emotional commitment in modern art, from the perspective of the artist as well as of 'the' public.

In the 1990s, contemporary art was characterised by a dual attitude of playful irony and critical distance. Now the question is: are we once more looking for the sincerity of 'real feelings' in our perception of art? If emotions are indeed 'intelligent', should they not play an important part in our everyday contact with art and with contemporary visual culture in general again?

Emotion Pictures is not intended to be an 'atlas of emotions’ by just 'showing' various human emotions as such. The exhibition sets out to provide a landscape, a sentimental journey through oeuvres, works of art and moods.

Around the focal presence of Mark Lewis, David Shrigley and Lily van der Stokker and with Bas Jan Ader as historical anchor, Emotion Pictures includes work by Nestor Krüger, Maria Lusitano, Sophie Nys, Althea Thauberger, Gitte Villesen, Gillian Wearing and Stephen Wadell.
