The artist does not illustrate the poems, but penetrates the deep layers of the verses and rhythms - mirroring the lyric and the connotations of the words in the abstractions. Thoughts and inspirations flow into the painting. Deposited in many layers of pigments, silk and Japanese papers, of wax and acrylic, charcoal and graphite, talc, alabaster and mamma flours, salts, spinel and canvas.
Carola Czempik's paintings evoke themes of language and colour, landscape, nature and poetry. They call up the Ukrainian roots of Celan and Ausländer, but also Judaism and the catastrophes of the Shoah and the Second World War. In view of the war of aggression against Ukraine, they have taken on a shattering topicality.
