Eric and Heather ChanSchatz: 10,483,200 Minutes

MCA Denver presents the solo exhibition, Eric and Heather ChanSchatz: 10,483,200 Minutes.

New York-based conceptual artists Eric and Heather ChanSchatz present paintings, sculptures, works on paper, and books, which inhabit the architecture and psychology of the social condition. Resulting from their engagement with individuals, communities and institutions, ChanSchatz have created artworks that explore communal relationships, structures of individuality, and the mapping of socio-political networks. Such interactions typically span several years to reach completion and have taken place internationally from New York to the Middle East. The works included in 10,483,200 Minutes present projects at different stages of progress providing audiences with a unique view of, and an opportunity to participate with, the many layers of ChanSchatz's practice.

The exhibition features ChanSchatz's monumental Universals series. Comprising one hundred hand-painted works on paper encased in acrylic domes, the Universals are brought together in an immersive architecturally-based installation that ChanSchatz have conceived for the MCA Denver.

In 10,483,200 Minutes, ChanSchatz are exhibiting for the first time their sculpture. Set within the dome-clad walls of the architectural units, the sculpture foregrounds four site-specific wall painting projects depicting recent communities that ChanSchatz have engaged. These communities include the choreographer Merce Cunningham and his dance company, American soldiers stationed in Iraq, coal miners of Western Pennsylvania, and the artists' neighbors on their block in the Meatpacking District of New York City.

In response to working with the MCA Denver, ChanSchatz have created dsp.0102 MCA, a project that will be completed over the course of the exhibition as guests participate in any of the twenty-two languages that define this project. Complementing the artists' project work, 10,483,200 Minutes includes ChanSchatz's on-going book projects. This multi-volume artwork highlights the research-based methodologies and discursive nature of the practice of Eric and Heather ChanSchatz.

The work of Eric and Heather ChanSchatz (both born 1968) has been represented in museum and gallery exhibitions in the United States and Europe. Their upcoming projects include a site-specific installation for Lever House in New York City, and a solo exhibition at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY.

A catalog of 10,483,200 Minutes is forthcoming and will be published to accompany the exhibition at the MCA Denver.

David A. Ross is the former director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Currently an independent curator, Ross began his museum career in 1971 as the world's first Curator of Video Art at the Everson Museum in Syracuse. He is a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
