Fernando Sánchez Castillo - SPACE OF RESISTANCE

The year 2010 will be marked by Spanish and Mexican artists intertwined through political language expressed in public art. The Museum initiates this thematic year with the Spanish artist Fernando Sánchez Castillo – his first solo exhibition in Scandinavia.

Fernando Sánchez Castillo (b. Madrid, 1970) reflects upon political history with contemporary eyes. His visual use of statues and monuments is highly relevant for us as a museum collecting and researching on public art. Born during the dictatorial regime of Francisco Franco, themes such as oppression, revolution and liberation are frequent in Sánchez Castillo’s work. He scrutinizes the near past and transforms it into a new multi-layered visual language where a playful hand embraces a serious theme. His fascination for collective memory and the recreation of real and imagined scenarios in the political history underlines a strong sociological influence. It shows a novel visual language grounded in historical monuments.

The Exhibition sheds light on preparatory works of public art, sketches and models. Videos, drawings and sculptures invite the viewer to reflect on the artist approach and ongoing developments. The creative process is a central aspect visualized through a range of projects, both from the past, present and future.
