Fiona Tan was born in Indonesia in 1966 to a Chinese father and a Scottish-Australian mother. She grew up in Australia and has lived in Amsterdam since her student days. The artist’s international background has formed a natural basis for her reflections on memory and identity, themes that are explored in terms of their beginning and end in Cradle (1998) and A Lapse of Memory (2007) – from the cradle, where identity first takes shape, through to the oblivion of old age, when memories and personality are erased. Tan expresses herself primarily in film and video, creating rich visual imagery at the intersection between documentary and literature.
