press release

Inspired by the Visual Music exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum, "Found Sound" is a downtown DC project that will explore the relationship between sound and music. Along with other galleries in Washington, including Fusebox, the Numark Gallery, Conner Contemporary Art, Curator’s Office and G Fine Art, the Goethe-Institut will place a private listening booth (actually an adaptation of a fancy "Port-a-Potty") on a sidewalk where it will serve a different purpose: as an enclosed sound booth. These mundane objects that are part of our daily environment will be transformed into spaces of high-concept art as mini-galleries that are accessible to passersby.

Participating artists include Richard Chartier, Joseph Grigely, Alberto Gaitán, Jennie C. Jones, Helmut Kopetzky, Brandon Morse, Robin Rose, and Alex Van Oss. Actor/satirist Harry Shearer – of The Simpsons, Spinal Tap, and A Mighty Wind – is contributing a piece on Hurricane Katrina.
