From February 2 until May 5, 2019, Estancia FEMSA-Casa Luis Barragán presents FRACCIONAR, a group exhibition curated by Inti Guerrero. Visitors will discover artworks by international artists, past and present, alongside high-end design furniture and archival documentation placed in strategic spots throughout Barragán’s former residence. The exhibition seeks to create moments where external drives and anxieties invade interior spaces. The exhibition presents a new reading of the house, emphasizing how Barragán understood this private zone—his habitat—as a refuge, with a focus on architecture as a structure that protects the individual’s psyche.

From a wealth of angles and contexts, the artworks presented in FRACCIONAR take on a variety of contentious issues related to history and contemporary society. These subjects range from specific colonialist episodes at a number of latitudes to queer subjectivities in conservative societies; class tensions inherent to social dynamics, the informal architecture we find in many Latin American cities and a great deal more. Infiltrating these disquieting issues within Casa Luis Barragán’s controlled, visually sublime and mythic environment, the show invites reflections—as political as they are poetic and emotional—on the architect’s legacy. Through a prism of subjectivities, the exhibition highlights the fragility and chaos inherent to human existence as well as our negotiations with Barragán’s timeless spaces’ beauty and serenity.

Colombian curator Inti Guerrero, based in Hong Kong, is currently Artistic Director of the non-profit art foundation Bellas Artes Projects, based in Manila and Bataan and Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art for Tate in London and has recently curated EVA Biennale 2018 in Ireland. He has curated exhibitions internationally, including at Tate Modern in London, Para Site in Hong Kong, Minsheng Museum in Shanghai, Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Torino, Museum of Contemporary Art in Manila, Kadist in San Francisco, and CA2M in Madrid, among others.
