press release

Frances Stark proposes that the creative self is a kind of performance, and her work is suffused with self-doubt, speculation, and vulnerability. Her recent film My Best Thing (2011, 1 hr 40 min) was created from her online chats and web video sessions with anonymous men who speak English as a second language. While the impetus of their conversations is virtual sex, their discussions range from life and work to art and politics. Over time their online meetings develop into true relationships between individuals rather than one-off, care-free interactions. The online meetings are brought to life through computer-generated animations complete with computerized voices. The vernacular language of contemporary digital communication punctuates the exchanges, its easy-going colloquialism contrasting with the very personal and vulnerable character of the interactions Stark has with her collaborators
