press release

Gagosian Gallery Athens is pleased to announce an exhibition of furniture, models, and collages by Franz West.

Influenced by Action and Performance Art of the 1960s, West rejected the traditionally passive way of viewing art. In the early seventies, he began making a series of small portable plaster sculptures called Passstücke, or “adaptives”. Viewers were encouraged to pick these up, carry them around, and experience how they adapted to the body. In many ways, West’s furniture designs are versions of these; they can be moved around, sat on or switched on and off. Chairs, lamps, divans, and tables, which he imbues with the presence of sculpture, are set in motion with a variety of corporeal attitudes and tactile responses.
