From Concept to Contemplation - David Smith at Work

In conjunction with David Smith: A Centennial, the Sackler Center presents an interpretive exhibition of photographs, sketches, and source material that illuminate the artist's working methods, the multiple sources of his inspiration, and his love of nature. From Concept to Contemplation: David Smith at Work includes photographs that Smith took to interpret or document his sculptures. These highly personal images reveal the artist's complex understanding of his own works, their pictorial aspects, and his fascination with viewing his sculpture in the natural landscape. Excerpts from the writings of noted scholars, as well as Smith's own words and writings by his daughter Candida Smith, provide interpretive commentary and multiple perspectives for considering the work on view.
